The Northern Governors Forum has called for calm following the blasphemy-related killing of Miss Deborah Samuel, a student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto.
The appeal was made by the forum's chairman and Plateau State governor, Simon Lalong, through his spokesperson, Dr Makut Macham, in Jos.
"The governors are concerned about the development, which is clearly an extra-judicial measure of dealing with perceived infraction," he said.
"The northern governors have appealed for calm following reports of a peaceful protest being hijacked, which later turned violent and resulted in the imposition of a curfew in Sokoto metropolis,"
The governors warned that any attempt to use self-help to address grievances, religious or otherwise, could lead to even more chaos.
The forum expressed condolences to the victim's family and requested that security agencies conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
It also expressed condolences to Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over the incident, while applauding the proactive measures he took to restore normalcy.
The governors assured him of their support and prayers in dealing with the situation, noting that they would take the necessary steps to prevent a recurrence in any part of the region or the country as a whole.
The forum also emphasized the importance of northern Nigerians and Nigerians showing love, tolerance, and respect for one another, regardless of faith, ethnicity, or other affiliations.
